With EOFY chaos still lingering in digital storefronts, this week’s gaming deals are a treasure trove of gold-plated discounts and cult classics ripe for the picking. Whether you're looking to binge your backlog or dip into something new before tax season wipes you out, I've found you hidden value on every platform. Let's get to it!
In retro news, I’m using my Flame Shard technique to ignite a 20-candle cake for Jade Empire. Released on the OG Xbox by BioWare, this RPG was a bold departure from the studio's previous titles, blending real-time combat with a rich narrative steeped in Chinese mythology. I have fond memories of assuming the role of the Last Spirit Monk, navigating a world filled with gods, demons, and moral choices that shaped my journey while reaffirming my lack of IRL decency.
The game's unique setting and incorporation of a constructed language, Tho Fan, added depth to its immersive world-building. Also, the Bruce Lee fan in me simply liked meeting new foes, asking them if they were thirsty, and then serving them a large glass of wa-taaa. Sadly, despite its innovative design and storytelling, Jade Empire didn't achieve the commercial success of BioWare's later franchises and remains a cult classic to fans like me.
